- June 25-Oct. 11, 2010 Exhibition “SAMURAI IN NEW YORK THE FIRST JAPANESE DELEGATION, 1860” at the Museum pf the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 0029
Celebrated as “one of the most novel and imposing spectacles ever witnessed in this City,” the visit to New York by a delegation of more than 70 samurai in 1860 was an opportunity for the brash young city to promote itself as the “Edo of the West.” Just seven years after Commodore Mathew Perry first opened the ports of the isolated island nation to the United States, New York welcomed the envoys with parades, balls, and minute-by-minute newspaper coverage throughout their two-week stay. On the 150th anniversary of this historical event, Samurai in New York revisits this watershed meeting of cultures.
